Shih Tzu are Good Family Pets

The common belief that all small dogs are hyper, yappy, frail little creatures is proven to be a myth once you meet a Shih Tzu. This sturdy, strong intelligent dog is an ancient Tibetan breed created to be a true companion. Believed to be a cross between the lap dog Pekingese and the guard dog Lhasa Apso, the Shih Tzu (meaning lion dog) possesses both qualities of these two wonderful breeds. Its stout, muscular body structure, minimal shedding hair (not fur), and loving, playful disposition make this breed a desirable pet for every member of the family.

Shih Tzu Maintenance and Grooming: Hair vs. Fur

The first characteristic to mention is the hair. Shih Tzu have hair, not fur and it should be noted that there are differences both in composition and in regards to pet maintenance. Types of hair can range from straight, wavy, curly, fine, coarse, cottony, long, or short. Shedding is controllable once the adult coat has fully grown in. Seasonally, hair will shed and, just like human hair, will shed when washed and brushed. Generally the Shih Tzu and other breeds with hair have minimal shedding problems which are easily maintainable. Many people are allergic to hair (or fur), and many sources will say that "hair dogs" are hypoallergenic. However, this is misleading in respect that hair (and fur) attracts allergens.
