Some women are blessed with a knowing hairstylist full of wisdom and helpful tricks to take care of their hair. For those eager for insider information without the cost and time that comes with it, here are the best tips for taking care of hair.

Washing the Hair

Shampooing daily can actually be more harmful for hair than skipping a day in between washes. Hair naturally produces oils to moisturize the scalp and ends, and can be washed out. This will either leave hair greasy due to the mix of natural oils and shampoo, or it will leave hair incredibly dry because all of those natural oils are being stripped out before they have properly moisturized. Obviously, going more than a day or two without washing will allow these oils, environmental pollution, and free radicals to build up and become dirty, but one or two days in between is ideal.

Conditioning can also be hard on the hair if it's done wrong. Using a conditioner that's too heavy can weigh the hair down and make it feel greasy and sticky. And using a conditioner that's too light will make hair feel like there's been no conditioner used at all, often allowing things to build up and feel greasy. The general rule of thumb is to use heavier for coarser hair, and lighter for fine hair. Also, conditioning the scalp can cause grease no matter how heavy or light it is. Only run conditioner about halfway down the hair strands and to the bottom to get that perfect amount of shine and smoothness.
