LASIK stands for LAser in SItu Keratomileusis, which means using a laser underneath a corneal flap (in situ) to reshape the cornea (keratomileusis).
Why is LASIK eye surgery done?
The human eye has been called the most complex organ in our body. To create an image on the retina (a series of light-sensitive cells lining the back of the eye), the cornea is a part of the eye that helps focus light. The amount of light coming in through the cornea is controlled by the pupil. The retina then reacts to the incoming light and sends a record of it via the optic nerve to the brain. The bending and focusing of light is also known as refraction.
The image on the retina becomes distorted or blurred when the shape of the cornea and the eye are not perfect. These imperfections in the focusing power of the eye are called refractive errors. Surgical procedures aimed at improving the focusing power of the eye are called refractive surgery. LASIK eye surgery, the most common type of refractive surgery, is an option for correcting these refractive errors (myopia, or near-sightedness; hyperopia, or farsightedness; and astigmatism) by reshaping the cornea to produce clearer and sharper vision.
