The head table at a wedding requires special decoration because it really is the focal point of the reception. Here are easy ways to make it more distinctive.
Head Table Decorations and Backdrops
- Place large white pillars (they can be purchased from any party store inexpensively and can be sold afterward) on each side of the head table to emphasize it and make it look very formal and grand.
- Have an engagement photograph or a special photograph enlarged and mounted behind the head table. Place a spotlight on the enlargement.
- On the wall behind the head table, have a projector show photos of the bride and groom with each photo staying up for about one minute and then gradually fading into the next. Or simply have the couples' names projected on the wall behind them.
- Put tea candles in small colored glass containers and line the entire length of the head table with them to give it a glowing effect. Use battery operated tea candle lights to avoid a fire hazard.
Wedding Head Table Seating Ideas
- Have the bride and groom sit on a love seat, as opposed to individual chairs.
- Raise the platform under where the bride and groom are seated, as well as their portion of the table, an extra half-foot so they sit slightly higher than the rest of the head table, giving them more prominence.
- Instead of always placing the bride and groom right in the middle of a long head table, why not put the bride and groom on the left or right side, next to the speaker’s podium. This allows guests’ eyes to not have to travel too far when speeches are being made to see the couple’s reactions. Also, most couples like to get up and thank each speaker and this way speakers do not have to walk along behind the table to get to them.
Alternative Sizes and Positioning of the Head Table
- For large weddings, where there are more than five attendants on each side, instead of one long table trying to seat 14 or more people, have a second long table directly behind the first one on a platform elevated two feet higher so guests can see all the attendants.
- Traditionally most people have the head table as a long table at the front of the room. Consider making it a round table, right in the center of the room with guests’ tables surrounding it in a circle.
- Have the head table curve in the form of an arc or semi-circle for a more intimate feel.
Whether it is the lighting, the backdrop, the seating of the bride and groom or even the size of the table, there are many beautiful wedding head table decorations that will impress guests.
