However, there are many simple techniques that can be applied by fledgling writers to improve the quality of their text. Five of the easiest and quickest remedies include:

Working Within the Limits of Personal Vocabulary

One of the greatest skills a writer can develop is to write from the heart, and to do that, a writer must work within their own vocabulary. That doesn’t mean that a writer shouldn’t increase his or her vocabulary, but it does mean that writers should avoid using words that clash with their core word repertoire. Adding complex words won’t necessarily make prose more succinct or enjoyable to read, but what it may do is give the reader the impression that the author has thrown a few roses in with the compost to sweeten the deal. Over time, your compost will become a nutrient-rich bed of possibility, but when you begin, throwing a few pretty flowers on top will only mask the smell: it won’t change what’s underneath.
