MCKINLEYVILLE, Calif. — Humboldt Bay-based Coast Guard members commemorated women veterans during an event Friday at Arcata Veterans Memorial Hall.

The “Honoring Women Veterans” program gathers all local women veterans and recognizes them for their selfless service to their country. This year’s event included women from all armed services, occupational specialties, and ages ranging from 30 to 94 years old. Many in attendance also participated in the WWII Honor Flight Program which departed from the Arcata airport last month.

Festivities included speeches from various community members, an emotional tribal drum performance in honor of women warriors, and a luncheon for all attendees. Local Coast Guardsmen helped out with coordinating the event and recognize all WWII veterans by pinning on handmade corsages.

The Coast Guard is grateful for all those who have selflessly served their country, and is honored to take part in ceremonies celebrating them. With Veterans Day fast approaching, the Coast Guard would like to say thank you:

“Semper Fidelis”

“This We’ll Defend”

“Honor, Courage, Commitment”

“Integrity First, Service Before Self, Excellence in All We Do”

Parking fee increases at the Arcata/Eureka Airport in McKinleyville will be a topic of discussion Tuesday during the Humboldt County Board of Supervisors meeting.

Republic Parking System Inc., the Tennessee-based company that operates the Arcata/Eureka Airport parking lot, has requested a 10 percent increase in short-term daily rates and a 12.5 percent increase in long-term daily rates. According to a county staff report, an increase was last approved by the board in 2007. A four-fifths vote of the supervisors is needed to approve these increases.

If approved, the overall financial impact to customers will be an increase of $1 a day. The first 30 minutes would be free for people parking in the short-term parking lot. Anything beyond 31 minutes and up to an hour would be $2. Each additional hour would be $2, and anything beyond five hours and up to 24 hours would be $11. In the long-term parking lot, rates would be $2 an hour with anything greater than four hours and less than 24 hours costing $9.

Republic Parking System Inc.'s request includes a comparison to other airport parking facilities throughout the state. The comparison chart states the average short-term daily rate is $15 and the average long-term daily rate is $9. It said the McKinleyville airport's current rates are below market rates in other areas.

According to the county staff report, an increase is being supported by the Humboldt County Department of Public Works Aviation Division
